OPTOMAP

Early detection of eye disease is the key to preventing loss of vision. D.A. Seaman Optometrists have recently invested in the latest diagnostic equipment, the OPTOMAP RETINAL EXAM. We believe we are currently the only practice in Norfolk to employ such an advanced system in digital imaging of the retina, the sight giving nerve layer at the back of the eye. During an eye examination the Optometrist will perform ophthalmoscopy, a procedure which involves shining a light into your eye to examine the internal structures. This is not easy as it equates to trying to see the inside of a ping-pong ball through a 3mm hole with a small torch!

The OPTOMAP system was developed in Scotland by Douglas Anderson, whose young son lost his sight when the retina became detached. As it was difficult to examine a child his defect was not noticed until irreparable damage had been done. As an engineer, Mr Anderson set about designing an instrument capable of imaging a very wide-field view of the retina in a patient friendly manner. His invention of the "Panoramic 200 non-mydriatic scanning laser ophthalmoscope" was marketed under the trade name of OPTOMAP. The optical profession now has a means of viewing up to 5 times the area of the retina seen by conventional ophthalmoscopy. In less than 1 second, OPTOMAP takes a digital image of the retina without the need for pupil dilation. Quick and painless, OPTOMAP is suitable for all ages, and hence we have included it in our comprehensive eye exam. To learn more about this exciting new development visit www.optos.com
